Ayutthaya
The Ancient Capital of Thailand
Ayutthaya, once the capital of the kingdom of Siam, stands as a testament to Thailand’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Located just 80 kilometers north of Bangkok, Ayutthaya is a city where history and modernity blend seamlessly, offering visitors a unique inside into Thailand’s past.
An inside into history
Founded in 1350 by King U Thong, Ayutthaya quickly grew into one of the world’s most impressive cities. Strategically located on an island surrounded by three rivers connecting to the Gulf of Siam, Ayutthaya became a trading hub attracting merchants from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Its prosperity and grandeur were unrivaled, boasting magnificent temples, palaces, and an extensive network of canals.
The fall of Ayutthaya
Despite its splendor, Ayutthaya faced numerous challenges. The city endured several Burmese invasions, with the final and most devastating attack occurring in 1767. The Burmese army razed Ayutthaya to the ground, marking the end of its era as the capital. The city was left in ruins, and the surviving inhabitants were forced to flee.
