Confucius — His legacy and influence in Vietnam

Confucius, known as Kong Fuzi or Master Kong, was a Chinese philosopher and teacher who lived from 551 to 479 BCE. His teachings have profoundly shaped Chinese culture and society, and their influence far beyond China’s borders. Confucius emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, kindness, and sincerity. His philosophy, known as Confucianism, became the foundation of Chinese social, political, and educational systems for centuries.

Confucius believed in the importance of education and self-cultivation. He taught that a virtuous person should act according to a code of ethics, which included filial piety (respect for one’s parents and ancestors), loyalty to the state, and benevolence towards others. His ideas were compiled by his disciples in a collection known as the “Analects,” which remains a central text in Confucianism.

The legacy of Confucius is evident in the social structures, customs, and values of several East Asian countries. In Vietnam, Confucianism was introduced during the Chinese domination period, which began in 111 BCE. Although Vietnam regained its independence from China in the 10th century…
