From Tulips to Snowflakes — My Semester in Minnesota — one of my dearest memories

As a Dutch student from the land of tulips, canals, and windmills (and a bit of weed ofcourse), the opportunity to study abroad in the United States was a dream come true. When I arrived in Minnesota, a state known for its frigid winters and warm-hearted people, I knew I was in for an adventure.

For half a year, I immersed myself in the life of an American university student at Minnesota State University Mankato. The sheer size of the campus was astounding, with green spaces, state-of-the-art facilities, and buildings that seemed to stretch endlessly. The resources available to students were incredible — from massive libraries to top notch sport facilities, there was always something to explore.

One of the most striking aspects of my time in Minnesota was the friendliness and hospitality of the locals. Minnesotans, true to their “Minnesota Nice” reputation, were always eager to help and make me feel at home. Whether it was giving directions, inviting me to events, or just striking up a conversation, the warmth of the people made the cold winter much more bearable.

Living in the Midwest offered a unique glimpse into a different way of life. The pace was relaxed, and community values were strong. I quickly became accustomed to the local traditions and…
