Traveling through Southeast Asia as a Westerner can be fascinating and eye-opening. Certain common perceptions and attitudes towards Westerners can be observed throughout the region, shaped by historical, cultural and social factors. Here’s a look at how Southeast Asians generally perceive Westerners, particularly in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
Curiosity and Hospitality
One of the most striking aspect of Southeast Asian cultures is their hospitality towards foreigners. During my travels in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines from October 2023 to March 2024, locals were particularly curious and welcoming. This curiosity often stems from a genuine interest in different cultures. Westerners might frequently be approached by locals wanting to practice English, ask you questions, or take photos together. This warm reception can make traveling in these countries a pleasant experience.
Perception of Wealth and Status
Many people in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines perceive Westerners as wealthier and enjoying a higher standard of living.
