Colonial Roots: The French Influence

The story of bánh mì begins in the mid-19th century when Vietnam was part of French Indochina. The French brought with them their culinary traditions, including the baguette. Initially, the baguette was enjoyed primarily by the French and the wealthy Vietnamese, filled with traditional French ingredients like butter, pâté, and ham.

Vietnamese Adaption

Over time, the Vietnamese began to adapt the Baguette to suit local tastes and ingredients. The traditional French fillings were replaced or complemented with Vietnamese flavors. Fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and various meats and spreads transformed the baguette into something uniquely Vietnamese. This culinary innovation was not just about flavor but also about making the sandwich more affordable and accessible to the local population.
