When I was in my third year at university in the Netherlands, I had no idea that my life was about to take an unexpected turn. It all started in September 2018 during our university’s “international week,” a special event where students from various countries would visit our campus to attend classes and engage with us. The goal was to help us broaden our perspectives and improve our English through real-world interactions. We had the change to learn about different cultures, hear stories from across the globe, and truly see the world through others’ eyes.

One particular lecture from that week left a lasting impression on me. A study abroad coordinator from our university came to talk about the possibilities of studying in a foreign country for a semester. The options were numerous — Students could go to countries across Europe, Asia, and even as far away as Australia. However, the moment she mentioned the possibility of studying in the United States, something in me sparked. Yet, at that time, I dismissed it. The idea of studying so far from home seemed too daunting, too out of reach. I had always struggled with homesickness, and the thought of being away for an extended period was terrifying.
